2016 Officer of the Year - Detective William Wood
The Farmington Public Safety Department is pleased to announce that Detective William Wood has been named the Officer of the Year for 2016. Detective Wood received this honor at the Department’s Annual Awards and Citations banquet which was held May 17th. Detective Wood is a ten (10) year veteran of the department who, according to Farmington Public Safety Director Frank Demers, “consistently displays the highest levels of professionalism and sets the standard for excellence in service to the community.”
Director Demers added, “Three words come to mind when describing Detective Wood; Courteous, Compassionate & Dependable. He brings these traits with him every day as he goes about performing his duties.”
In January of 2016, Detective Wood was assigned to the Investigations Unit where he quickly adapted to his new position and was able to establish his priorities and manage a heavy caseload in a very efficient manner. He continues to seek training opportunities to sharpen his investigative skills and improve his overall performance.
Director Demers said, “Detective Wood’s dependability is unmatched. He consistently has one of the highest off-duty response rates to fire callbacks. He willingly volunteers for special details and community events and he shows a tremendous amount of care and compassion with everyone he has contact with.”
A significant contribution Detective Wood made in 2016 was establishing a partnership with Back Alley Bikes, a non-profit organization that restores and distributes used bikes to underprivileged youth in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. Because of this partnership, the public safety department now donates unclaimed bicycles to Back Alley Bikes as a way to give back to the community and support a very worthy cause. In addition to the above, Detective Wood also serves as a Department Range Instructor and he is a member of the Department’s Honor Guard.
Detective Wood’s personnel file is loaded with awards, citations and accolades that truly exemplify his passion for public safety. He has received two (2) Life Saving Awards, six (6) Unit Citations, one (1) Department Citation and thirty-four (34) Letters of appreciation. Many of the letters of appreciation are from community members who expressed their sincere appreciation for Detective Wood’s kindness and professionalism.
