Farmington Farmer Market celebrates opening day May 18

Farmington, MI (May 8, 2019) -- The Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market opens its 26th season of community service on Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. with a special celebration at the Sundquist Pavilion in downtown Farmington’s Riley Park.

The festivities begin with a short program observing Armed Services Day featuring a color guard, drum line and Miss Farmington performing the national anthem. Guests from the Yankee Air Museum representing the Willow Run Bomber Plant will also be on hand. These volunteers, each one dressed as Rosie the Riveter, provide a link to Detroit’s and Michigan’s role as the Arsenal of Democracy during World War II. Members of the American Legion Walker Groves Post of Farmington will be serving that delicious first outdoor hot dog of the season.

A welcome from Farmington’s Mayor Steven Schneemann, as well as guest speakers, live entertainment and children’s activities will reflect “Saturday life in a Michigan small town.” Then the old market bell will ring, inviting all within hearing distance to come enjoy our Flower Day.

The Farmington Beautification Committee will hand out free sunflower seedlings as part of “Sunflower Explosion,” an annual community sunflower contest.

A demonstration by acclaimed chef Jeff Rose from the C.A.Y.A. Grille in Commerce will kick off the market’s signature chef series, “Cook’n at the Market,” sponsored by Michigan’s own Calder Dairy. This fun, learn-and-sample event is free and starts at 10 a.m. on the south bricks of the pavilion.

The social dance group Swing Farmington will help market goers swing into spring with free lessons from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Presented by Fresh Thyme and Beaumont, the Farmington Farmers & Artisans market takes place every Saturday until October 26 at Grand River and Grove Street in the heart of downtown Farmington. It’s free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.farmingtonfarmersmarket.com
