Farmington celebrates area veterans

In September, the City of Farmington quietly launched a military banner program to recognize and pay tribute to the military heroes with connections to our community. Collectively, we hope this public expression of gratitude will start conversations that will honor our history and shape the future, explained Farmington Public Safety Commander Andrew Morche’. It is important to remember the service and sacrifices that have been made to protect the nation, the community, and the freedoms we all enjoy.

Eight banners featuring a few of our veterans now hang throughout the Downtown-primarily along Grand River Avenue. The banners will be displayed until the end of November when they will be removed with care prior to the anticipated wintery weather.

We are currently accepting applications for our second installment and plan to reinstall our first eight banners for Memorial Day 2021. Loved ones can apply for a banner; the cost is $225. Approved banners will hang on the decorative light poles in downtown Farmington from May through November. Each banner will display a photograph of the service member or veteran, their rank, name, branch of service, dates of service and awards. At the end of the season, banners will be returned to the purchaser. To apply, the service member must be currently serving or have been honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.

Applications can be found at www.farmgov.com/militarybanners.
