Honoring Sharon Bernath: A devoted advocate for the Governor Warner Mansion

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Bernath, a long-time volunteer and dedicated advocate for the Governor Warner Mansion, who served the community with passion and commitment. Sharon passed away last week, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and historical preservation.

Sharon's contributions to the Governor Warner Mansion and the Farmington community are immeasurable. She was a valued member of the Historical Commission for 10 years, where her expertise and dedication played an instrumental role in preserving the city’s rich history.

In addition to her service on the Historical Commission, Sharon served on the Friends of the Mansion Board of Directors. She was credited with founding the Warnerettes Parasol Drill Team, a Farmington iconic parasol drill team known for their poignant performances and "Votes for Women" sashes, that paid homage to the women's suffrage movement. Her tireless efforts brought joy and history to life, especially during one of the community's favorite events, Ghost Night at the Mansion.

As a Governor Warner Mansion docent, Sharon spent countless hours planning, promoting, and ensuring the viability of this treasured community asset. Her passion for local history extended beyond the Mansion, as demonstrated by her receipt of the prestigious Dick Carvell Award in 2018, recognizing her exceptional commitment to the preservation of Farmington's history.

Volunteering aside, Sharon was a warm and giving person. She was full of fun stories – one of her favorite pairs of shoes had springs under the heals, they were bouncy and comfortable. She wore these while traveling abroad so her feet wouldn’t tire.

Sharon radiated warmth and kindness and could make everyone around her feel valued and appreciated. She was smart and had a wealth of interests – including horseback riding. Sharon was, and still is, an inspiration.

Sharon's impact will be felt for many years to come, and her legacy will continue to inspire all those who cherish the history and heritage of our community. The Warnerettes continue to march in every City parade and in other neighboring communities as well. The group also created a Sharon Bernath Honorary Scholarship through the Farmington/Farmington Hills Education Foundation.

The City of Farmington extends its deepest condolences to Sharon's family and friends during this time of loss.

A memorial service is planned at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Saturday, November 23rd at 10 a.m.
