Who Can Register?
To register to vote in Michigan, you must:
- Be a United States citizen.
- Be a Michigan resident and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days by Election Day.
- Be at least 18 years old by Election Day. Eligible 16- and 17-year-olds may preregister to vote.
- Not currently be serving a sentence in jail or prison.
Registering Within 14 Days of an Election
Within 14 days of an election, including Election Day, you must register in person at your local Clerk’s Office and provide proof of residency.
Eligible residents in line at the City Clerk’s Office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day have the right to register and vote.
Ways to Register
Register Online
Online registration is available when there are at least 15 days before an election.
Information needed: A Michigan driver’s license number, Michigan state ID number, or the last four digits of your Social Security number.
Register by Mail or Email
Mail and email registration are available when there are at least 15 days before an election.
Download and complete a voter registration application. The application may be mailed or scanned and emailed to the City Clerk’s Office.
Deadline: Mailed applications must be postmarked at least 15 days before Election Day. Scanned and emailed applications should also be submitted at least 15 days before Election Day.
Register in Person
You may register in person at the City Clerk’s Office. Within 14 days of an election, in-person registration is the only option for participating in that election.
If registering within 14 days of an election, bring one acceptable document showing your current name and Farmington address.
Election Day deadline: 8:00 p.m.
Proof of Residency
Proof of residency may be shown on paper or electronically. The document must display your current name and residential address.
Acceptable Documents Include:
- Michigan driver’s license or state ID
- United States passport
- Current utility bill
- Bank or credit card statement
- Insurance document
- Lease agreement
- Paycheck or government check
- Financial aid or school enrollment document
- Another government document
After You Register
Once an eligible registration is processed, your name will be added to Michigan’s Qualified Voter File. The City Clerk’s Office will mail you a voter information card showing your precinct and polling location. The voter information card is helpful but is not required in order to vote.
